How-to Order a new key for your Mercedes-Benz

The key to your security.

At Mercedes-Benz, we engineer our vehicles to adhere to the most uncompromising standards - so why would we settle for less when it comes to protecting our drivers? Actually, we don't.
 

Our scrutiny is your peace of mind.

Only you, or someone authorized by you, can order a replacement key from Feldmann Imports. In order to do so, we will require proof of identity and vehicle ownership with original documents, as detailed below.

 
Process for ordering Mercedes-Benz replacement keys 

Items you will need to bring with you

If you are the vehicle owner

  1. Current valid vehicle registration, title or any ownership document.
  2. Valid government issued photo ID. (Driver's license or passport)

 

For company owned vehicles

  1. If a company owned vehicle, a letter (on letterhead) authorizing the employee to order a key on the company's behalf. This letter must include the name of the person authorized, the VIN and a name and signature of an authorized person giving permission.
  2. The authorized person will also need to bring a valid government issued driver/operator's license or passport. 

 

If you are not the owner of the vehicle and acting as an "authorized representative" the following will be needed.

  1. The original of the vehicle registration, title or any ownership document, which would be accepted by a state motor vehicle agency to issue a title.
  2. The original of the authorized representative's government issued driver/operator license with a photo or a passport
  3. An original document authorizing the representative to act on behalf of the vehicle owner.
  4. Original or photocopy of the vehicle owner's government issues driver/operator license with photo or passport.

 

Activating your key

We will need to test the remote and mechanical key function. To do so, we will need access to your vehicle - either at the dealership or at the location of the vehicle. The repair process will be documented on a Repair Order. This process may be subject to an additional service charge.

 

Key FAQ's -

Who is considered an authorized Representative? An authorized representative is someone who is acting on behalf of the owner of the vehicle. An authorized representative may be:

  • A private citizen or family member acting on behalf of the owner
  • Independent workshop acting on behalf of their customer
  • An employee acting on behalf of their employer
  • A government official acting on behalf of their agency or department
  • An association member acting on behalf of their organization 

Are the documents required to be notarized? No, only the presentation and verification of all required documentation is necessary.

Can I mail electronic keys? No. Electronic keys cannot be drop-shipped to a third-party location.

I've seen advertisements for Mercedes-Benz electronic keys on the internet stating that they can be programmed at the dealer. Is this true? No. Mercedes-Benz does not sell un-programmed electronic keys on the internet. Please note that electronic keys cannot be re-programmed to another vehicle.

Customer has a salvage certificate. Can we accept salvage titles? A salvage certificate is an acceptable from of vehicle identification.

Can electronic keys be sold to a locksmith over the counter? No, electronic keys cannot be sold over the counter. However, the locksmith can act as an authorized representative of the customer. In this case, the vehicle would need to be brought into the Mercedes-Benz dealership to complete key repair. If this is not possible, the dealer can dispatch authorized Service personnel to complete the repair locally.

I have exported my vehicle out of the country and need an electronic key. What can I do? Customer should be referred to the Daimler related service organization in the country where the vehicle is located. TRP orders for any vehicle not physically located within the USA cannot be accepted.

I have an imported vehicle, can I order a key for this vehicle?  Yes vehicles imported to the USA can have keys ordered for them, however additional information and documentation will be needed. Please contact the parts department for the current policy.

Will the key require programming in the repair shop?

Mercedes-Benz car & SUV keys

This will depend on the year, make and model of the vehicle and circumstances. 

Generally speaking 2013 and prior years will require a simple activation procedure of inserting the original key in the ignition, rotating the key to the run position then removing the original key. Insert the replacement key and rotate to the run position and they key will synch to the vehicle. This is a common activation, but does not apply to all vehicles. 2014 and newer vehicles will require programming in the service department. Please contact your service advisor for current programming charge.

My key was lost or stolen, how do I get a replacement key? If your key is lost or stolen it is the recommendation of Mercedes-Benz that all lock cylinders and the ignition switch be replaced. When a key is lost or stolen it still works for the vehicle until it is changed or the FOB is deactivated at the dealership. The metal blade key that is inserted in the FOB will still work on the vehicle and open doors, trunk, glove box and any other non electronic locks. If you choose to not replace all the locks you will be asked to sign off on the Mercedes-Benz TRP form acknowledging that you were informed and chose not to replace the locks. If you choose this route remember that the FOB will work on your vehicle until either the battery dies or the FOB is deprogrammed in the service department. Please contact our service department for the current deprogramming rate and if any additional work will be needed.

My vehicle is in the service department for a repair that requires a replacement key, or ignition switch. If your vehicle is in the service department for repair work and requires either a new key or FOB the following will be needed. 

  1. Current valid vehicle registration (Wisconsin requires owner's to keep registration in the vehicle at all times)
  2. A signed repair order authorizing work to be done on the vehicle.

The technician will diagnose the problem, and order the parts needed with the required documentation. The technician will deactivate any FOB's that have been replaced and most times the metal key blade is just transferred to the new FOB.
