Owning a Mercedes-Benz electric vehicle (EV) like the EQE, EQS, or EQB brings with it a commitment to both luxury and sustainability. To ensure that your Mercedes-Benz EV continues to perform at its peak, it’s crucial to adhere to a proper maintenance schedule. This guide will take you through the necessary maintenance steps to keep your EV running efficiently.

General Maintenance Tips for Mercedes-Benz EVs

Routine Checks and Milestone Services

Every 10,000 Miles:

  • Regular Inspections: It’s essential to have your EV checked every 10,000 miles. This includes rotating the tires to prevent uneven wear and potentially extending their lifespan.
  • Wiper Blades and Fluids: Replacement of windshield wiper blades and topping off the windshield wiper fluid are also recommended.

Every 20,000 Miles:

  • Comprehensive Inspections: This includes a detailed check of the battery, charging cables, and vehicle sockets for any damage.
  • Brake System Maintenance: Inspect and possibly replace brake fluid, brake pads, and discs. Regular checks help in maintaining the efficiency of regenerative braking systems.
  • Cooling System: We check and replace coolant fluids as needed to ensure optimal thermal management of the battery and other critical components.
  • HEPA and Cabin Filter Replacement: For models like the EQS, replacing the cabin air filters ensures that the air inside your vehicle remains clean and fresh.

Additional Considerations for EV Maintenance

  • Battery Care: Avoid fully charging or completely draining the battery to extend its life. Also, frequent use of fast chargers should be minimized as it can degrade the battery more quickly.
  • Transmission Fluid: For EVs with a direct-drive or multi-speed transmission, consult your owner’s manual for guidelines on fluid changes.

Why Maintain Your Mercedes-Benz EV?

Maintaining your Mercedes-Benz EV not only ensures reliable performance but also helps in retaining its value over time. While the maintenance costs for EVs are generally lower compared to gasoline-powered cars, keeping up with scheduled maintenance can prevent costly repairs down the line.

Unique Features of Mercedes-Benz EV Maintenance

Mercedes-Benz EVs offer more than just a driving experience; they include additional luxury features that also require attention:

  • EQS Cartridge Changes: The EQS model features the Air Balance cabin fragrance system. Regular changes of the scent cartridges can enhance your driving experience, allowing you to enjoy a variety of fragrances like fig and linen.
  • Charging Equipment: Regular inspection of the charging cable and socket is crucial to ensure safe and efficient power delivery.

In 2023, Mercedes-Benz will begin it’s own battery recycling plant located in Kuppenheim in southern Germany. The process design of the patented hydrometallurgy with recovery rates of more than 96 percent is expected to allow a holisticcircular economy of battery materials. The recovered materials will be fed back into the recycling loop.

Mercedes-Benz is investing a double-digit million euro amount in research and development, as well as in the construction of the CO2-neutral pilot plant in Kuppenheim. The project has received the prospect of funding under the Battery Innovation Support Program of the German Federal Ministry of Economics and Climate Protection.

In the future, the new pilot plant will map the entire process chain of battery recycling: from the development of logistics concepts and the sustainable recycling of valuable raw materials to the reintegration of recyclate into the production of new batteries. The new recycling plant is based on an innovative mechanical/hydrometallurgical process, which completely dispenses with energy-intensive and material-consuming pyrometallurgical process steps. The direct integration of hydrometallurgy into the overall concept of a recycling plant is a first in Europe, and acts as a key element in the realization of sustainable battery recycling in the sense of a true circular economy.

Construction of the plant is in two stages. Initially, a plant for mechanical dismantling will be constructed by 2023. As a second step – subject to promising discussions with the public sector – the facilities for hydrometallurgical processing of the battery materials are to go into operation. This means that in the future, Kuppenheim could cover all the stages from dismantling to module level, shredding and drying and subsequent processing of battery-grade material flows.

The pilot plant is expected to have an annual capacity of 2,500 tonnes. The recovered materials will be fed back into the recycling loop to produce more than 50,000 battery modules for new Mercedes-Benz electric models. Based on the findings of the pilot plant, production volumes could be scaled up in the medium to long term.

Are you ready to make the move to an electric vehicle? Or maybe you’ve already purchased your EV and are preparing to bring it home? Either way, it’s good to be aware of the life expectancy of the battery and how it may impact the long-term costs of ownership.

What is the Average Electric Vehicle Battery Life?
Like any car battery, your EV battery will eventually need to be replaced. However, the average electric battery life is significantly longer than the battery life of a traditional gas-powered vehicle. EV drivers in the Twin Cities will be pleased to know that their expected electric battery life is 10 to 20 years!

How Often is EQS Battery Service Required?
One of the key benefits of owning an electric vehicle is the limited maintenance required. EV battery maintenance is only needed every 10,000 to 20,000 miles. You can rejoice in the fact that you’ll spend more time driving around the Minneapolis/St. Paul area and less time in the service bay, but it’s still critical that you never miss an EQS battery service visit. During this service, the battery and related components are thoroughly inspected to confirm that everything is in strong condition. You can schedule your service visit online or by calling us at (952) 567-2180.

How to Make Your EQS Battery Last Longer
In addition to keeping up with EV battery maintenance, good driving habits in Minnesota can help extend the life of your EQS battery:

  • Try to avoid charging your EQS every single night, and maintain a battery percentage of 20%–80%.
  • Park your EQS in a shady area when it’s hot, as high temperatures are known to reduce a battery’s total capacity.
  • Park your EQS in a heated garage during the winter whenever it’s possible and avoid letting the battery go below a 20% charge.
  • Use the slower charging option when you can. DC Fast Charging is convenient when you need to gain some electric range quickly, but overusing the DC Fast Chargers around the Twin Cities can deplete your battery over time.

EQS Battery Warranty
If you keep up with EQS battery service checks and use the aforementioned battery life tips, you should have no problem getting your EQS battery to last 10 years or more. Mercedes-Benz also offers a generous 10-year/155,000-mile warranty for the EQS battery, giving you total confidence and peace of mind when you take ownership from Feldmann Imports.

Charging your EV (electric vehicle) is just like filling up with gasoline. However, now the gas station is a charging station and the fuel is electricity. Let’s look at the the different ways for you to charge an Electric Vehicle in Minnesota.

Level 1 Charging
All plug-in vehicles come equipped with a Level 1 charging cord that can travel with the vehicle. Simply plug into a standard 120-volt electricity outlet (a typical household electrical outlet). Eight hours of charging will provide about 40 miles of range.

Level 1 chargers are perfect for places you park you vehicle for long periods of time, such as work or at home. If you drive no more than 40-50 miles a day, this may be an adequate charger for at-home charging.

Level 2 Charging
This requires a 240-volt outlet (the same as an electric clothes dryer or water heater requires). You’ll get between 20-30 miles of range per hour of charging using a Level 2 charger. Since most of your charging is likely done at home, it is recommended that you install a Level 2 charger in your home by a local electrician. Level 2 charger installation costs vary, but typically range between $500-$2,000 for this service.

DC Fast Charger
These are typically installed at public charging stations. They are compatible with most EVs and are very fast, typically providing up to 100 miles of range in less than 30 minutes.

Twin Cities EV Charging Locations
As of this article, the Minneapolis/St. Paul area has over 1,550 charging stations. 202 of those are Free Stations, 158 are DC Fast Chargers and 440 have been added in the past 90 days. Here is more information on chargers located throughout the Twin Cities:
